Anyone who works in an environment where they’re seen by others likely has a dress code to follow. Even if your company doesn’t have one, you’ll want to dress so that you fit in with other people. If you don’t, you might not be seen as much of a team player, and that can hurt your chances for things like raises and promotions. Not all companies care about those kinds of things, but why take a chance? Instead, look around and see what others in your environment are wearing. Are the dressed in a very sophisticated way, or is it a more relaxed atmosphere?

No matter what kind of work environment you find yourself in, fitting in is generally the best way to do things. Once you’ve gotten a sense for what people are wearing there, it’s time to head out and find clothes that will work for you and your job. You might already have a closet full of them, which would be very convenient. If you don’t, you can find what works for you. Not having a lot of money doesn’t have to be a big hindrance. There are plenty of thrift stores and consignment shops that you can hunt for clothing at, and you can also try yard, moving, and estate sales.

A lot of people are finding great clothing that way, and they’re paying a fraction of the cost that they would pay if the bought the item new. That lets them buy a lot more for the amount they’d planned to spend, and it’s always great when money goes further than you thought it would. Don’t despair if you don’t find great things right away, either. Keep going back and spending time looking, and you’ll find some great, mix-and-match pieces you can use for a long time.
