Many people would not think of thrift shops are a place to explore life saving programs. Sure, we think of dropping off our used clothes, furniture, and old books. We think of food to help the needy and winter hats and gloves for kids who can’t afford them. There are a number of other programs however for which the Salvation Army is famous and which provide a valuable service to those who partake in the programs. Here are a couple of these programs:
1.) Prisoner Rehabilitation Program- Indeed, the Salvation Army can be a pipeline to getting rehabilitated prisoners back into society and into the work force. The organization works with prisons, parole officers as well as probation officer and courts in order to facilitate a prisoners re-entry into society. As part of the program, those prisoners who commit misdemeanor crimes can get the opportunity to finish out the last of their sentence with community service.
2.) Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation- The Salvation Army has quite a number of rehab centers, numbering almost 120 in total. Substance Abuse has long been an area to deal with for the company as their various professionals and volunteers help people deal with alcohol, marijuana, prescription pill issues as well as other afflictions. The well staffed resource centers help people to work out their problems so they can return to a normal life of work and family.
As you can see, The Salvation Army is far more than a place to get a great used flannel shirt. If you have an affliction with drugs or alcohol or know someone who is homeless then go ahead and give them a call.
