When you buy a piece of clothing, even if it’s not that expensive, you want it to last a long time. Part of that will come from how it was made, but another part of it will come from how you care for it. Moths can eat it, it can get damaged by pets, and even washing it incorrectly can become a problem. Don’t assume that all clothing is supposed to be cared for in the same way, either, because there are instructions on clothing for a reason. If you simply throw all of your clothing into the washer and dryer together, you may find that the more delicate pieces of clothing really don’t survive as long as you would hope.
You can also damage clothing by drying it on a heat setting that’s too high or by leaving it in a place where it’s exposed to something harmful, like cigarette smoke or certain kinds of chemicals. You can’t always avoid damage to your clothing, because there are plenty of places you go in everyday life where something could happen to it. However, in your own home you can take care of it the best way possible. That begins with reading the instructions for how to care for it.
When you follow them, you’ll be much more likely to prolong the life of a piece of clothing you’ve purchased. If it’s supposed to be dry cleaned, don’t just throw it in the washer. It might survive intact, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for the garment. If you do that often, you can significantly shorten the lifespan of that particular piece of clothing, so keep that in mind. Also pay attention to how hot the water is, what’s being washed with it, and whether it’s going to fade. Those will all help you keep your clothing looking better longer.
