Style on a Budget

Being frugal and being fashionable aren’t mutually exclusive! Follow these tips to achieve high-end style on a budget.

  • Great shoes are an upgrade to any outfit. Don’t wear worn-out shoes, no matter how nice your outfit is, it’ll make it look cheap. Have shoes re-heeled and shined if needed.
  • It’s all about the accessories. Accessories are an inexpensive way to jazz up your outfits. Have fun choosing scarves, jewelry, hats and sunglasses that add a little pop to a simple outfit, such as jeans and a white tee. Do double-duty. When you see a piece of clothing or accessory that you want to buy, ask yourself if it can go with more than one thing you already own. If not, don’t buy it. Make your fashion dollars go farther by purchasing items that you can mix-and-match with several things that are in your closet.
  • Go vintage. Vintage shops offer classic styles and you can often find great bargains. Just be sure items are in good condition–check zippers, buttons and pockets before you purchase. You can also find great deals at upscale consignment shops, where designer clothing can be had at a discounted price.
  • Get on the list. Some chains have mailing lists, if you get on a list you’ll be notified when sales are happening. At boutiques, let a salesperson know you are looking for a specific item and many will be pleased to let you know when it is available.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix high-end with low-end. A more expensive pair of jeans can be paired with less-pricey tops. It isn’t stylish to wear items just as you see them in a magazine or on a mannequin!
  • Buy classic items that you can get a lot of mileage out of. Examples include a black dress, jeans, or a white blouse. Being a slave to trends can be expensive.
