Are you having trouble finding a color that looks great on you? Do you have a shirt that has faded into a blah color? If you have a creative person or want to try something new, try your hand at turning your bland-colored shirts into bold colors with various dyes.
Dye clothing is easy and cheap. It will however take up a little bit of your time. Take an afternoon and turn your clothing into something bold. As you are looking for the best color for you, you will also want to make sure you get a good brand. RIT and tintex dyes are the way to go. They usually have acid, direct, and disperse dyes. You will need acetic acid to help the acid dye and salt to help the direct dye correctly.
You will need to wash the shirts before you dye them. After they are washed, boil water on your stove. After it has boiled, add the dye and let it dissolve into the water.
Take the dissolved dye and pour it through a metal coffee strainer into a large pot on your stove. The pot should be on low heat. Make sure you are careful so that you are not sprayed with hot water.
Stir the dye, add the wet shirts to the dye, and continue to stir the shirts. Remember that the hotter the heat the more boldly the color of the shirt will be. Usually the first couple of shirts will be darker than those that come after. If the fabric you are dying is made from cotton, rayon, or linen, you will need to add more salt than the packet says. You can add about 1 cup of table salt per shirt or clothing. Adding the salt will help the dye stay in the fiber of the shirt. Take the shirt out of the bath, rinse and lukewarm water, and then in cold. Continue to rinse.
